Runners
These patent pending runners are made of 7075-T6 heat treated Aircraft Aluminum and extruded to our exact specifications in our own custom die. The extrusion company we use makes parts for Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, and other aircraft companies, so the quality and repeatability are there.
The profile of the runner is engineered to best perform against all types of snow. When manufactured, it is checked in a “go-no go” gage to ensure that each runner is the same shape.
The top of the runner is designed as a sliding track to allow bolts to be moved up and down in the runner and attach hardware anywhere, no holes are needed. Our bolts (see Components) fit in the track and won't turn so you can do repairs with one tool.
Our Runners do not have holes drilled in them. There are so many patterns and requirements, we could not satisfy them all and still have strength left in the runner. The aluminum web can be easily drilled with a sharp bit. Avoid cutting the inside of the top and bottom lips. This may introduce a potential stress concentration factor that may allow, over time, the runner to crack at the cut.
The strength of the snap fit is governed by the distance between the two edges of the runner and is engineered to be a pretty tight fit. We know from experiments that it is very hard to knock the plastic off of these runners, so if you want an easier “snap” take some fine sandpaper and gently smooth the sharp edge. Sand it down smoothly, avoid nicking the edge. Also, if your sled is put together with bolts that go through the runner, avoid over-tightening them (no matter whose runners you use!). This stresses the runner more than necessary and may cause premature failure. It also draws the snap edges closer together and may make it more difficult to snap in where the bolts are.
We don't paint, coat, anodize, etc the runners. It just costs money and serves no purpose. The extremely thin layer of Aluminum Oxide that naturally occurs on the surface is one of the hardest materials in nature.
All our runners are the same length, roughly 10' from tip to tip. If you want shorter runners, they may be easily cut with an ordinary hacksaw and the edges sanded smooth (nicks and cuts are not a problem at the ends).
SALE: We have just a few sets of the original Snap Fit Runners still in stock. These have a dovetail on top and fit some of old sled components. The Track Bolts DO NOT WORK on these runners. Until they are gone, we will sell them for $188.00 per set.
